1&1 Internet has been a leading provider of web hosting services since the
1990's. It supports hosting for 8 million different domains worldwide.
The bulk of its clients are in Europe. However, 1&1 Internet also has a sizable
presence in North America. 1and1's main hub in North America is its Data Center
located in Kansas City, KS. It is the state-of-the-art data center like
this that makes 1&1 Internet one of the most reliable and most powerful hosting provider in the
industry. The features of the 1and1 data center are as follows:
The Server Rooms -- The 1&1 server rooms are the heart of the data center and
provide security, power, cooling and fire protection for up to 40,000 servers.
An access system only grants access to people on a need-to-have basis, after
proper authentication. Feeds from several UPS(uninterruptible power
supply) systems provide stable, reliable power and a 4-feet high raised floor
provides ample and unobstructed space for cold air from up to 9 CRAC (computer
room air conditioning) systems per room to cool the servers.
The Pump Rooms -- These rooms contain the mechanical systems (e.g. secondary
pumps, variable frequency drives) connecting the outside cooling infrastructure
with pipe system and CRAC units inside the 1&1 data center. the state of the
art fire detection and prevention systems are also housed here. These
systems include a very early smoke detection system, an FE-25 gas-type
extinguishing system, and a double interlock pre-action sprinkler system.
The Lab -- In this room, equipment can be tested to ensure interoperability,
stability, security and proper long-term operation.
The Loading Dock and Clean Storage Room -- Here, new equipment can be brought
in quickly and efficiently and stored safely. A clean storage room is an
environmentally controlled space that maintains a low level of pollutants.
This helps protect our servers from dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles
and chemical vapors.
The Battery Rooms -- Each electrical room contains a battery room that
provides protection and an adequate environment (e.g. cooling, air exchange) for
the battery power banks.
The Electrical Rooms -- These rooms are designed to house 1and1 hosting's power distribution
infrastructure, transformers, automatic transfer switches and the UPS
(uninterruptible power supply) systems. The UPS is connected to battery
power banks which are housed in a dedicated room. Static switches are used
to switch to a redundant UPS in case of failure of the regular UPS.
The Network Rooms -- Two separate rooms provide secure space for redundant
routing systems of different vendors that constantly transport data back and
forth between the 1and1 servers and the high speed 20 Gbit internet connection.
Data streams along at 100 Mbps between the servers connected to our network and
is protected fro external intrusions by redundant firewall systems.
The Chiller Area - 3 redundant chiller plants outside of the 1and1 datacenter are designed to provide a continuous flow of a
chilled water/glycol mixture to CRAC (computer room air conditioning) units
inside the data center. Each plant has its own set of pipes and own set of
primary and secondary pumps so that a failure in one plant cannot affect the
others. If necessary, the initial 400 ton capacity of each plant can be
doubled by adding a second chiller per plant.
The Generator Area -- Initially 2 generator systems supply up to 2250KW each
to the data center in case of the outage of the utility power supply. 2
independent ATS (automatic transfer switches) systems constantly monitor the
utility feeds and automatically start the generators in case of such an outage.
Three additional generator systems are planned for the future as the power
demand rises in the data center.
